Artists Past and Present:
Pino Mori (1920 - 1994)
Pino Mori is a well-known artist from the Marche region. He was born on 19th February 1920 in Campofilone, a village located a few miles away from Montefiore dell’Aso where he also chose to spend a lot of his time, and he moved there permanently in the ‘50s.
After completing his studies at the Adolfo Venturi Art Institute in Modena, he dedicated his life to painting, teaching painting and drawing, and History of Art in the city of Fermo. He worked in oils, water colours, and pencil and charcoal.
Most of Pino’s artwork focused on landscapes, seascapes, towns, beaches, nature and still life. His character can be understood in terms of three fundamental aspects: the man, the teacher and the artist.
He was a deeply political man, and fought for the interests of the many against the forces of individualism and exploitation by the powerful. He staunchly and vociferously defended his territory and the institutions he took pride in, especially his last role as a member of the local council, and President of the hospital in Montefiore dell’Aso throughout the 70s and 80s.
However, his tough exterior when dealing with political matters changed utterly when dealing with artistic matters, in which he showed great tenderness and delicacy. Although his landscapes often present a harsh, violent view of the world, he was also capable of great sensitivity and tenderness in his depiction of nature (particularly flowers) and people, conveying a wonderful sense of peace.
He was a greatly loved teacher, and, to honour his memory, the local council of Montefiore dell’Aso set up a painting competition in his name the year after he died, which continues annually to this day.
