Giancarlo Basili

Giancarlo Basili is one of the brightest lights in the current Montefiore firmament. As a scenographer, he is a major figure in the current cinema scene in Italy and beyond, and is the leading light in the annual film festival in the town each year.

He was born in the town in 1952 and studied fine art in Fermo, and then at the Accademia delle Belle Arte in Bologna. He started his professional career in 1972 as the assistant set designer in a major theatre in Bologna, where he designed sets for plays, ballet and opera. Between 1982 and 88 he collaborated with the celebrated designer and director Pier Luigi Pizzi, and, in 1985, was honoured with the role of Director of the Theatre Festival in Parma.

However, his work was not only restricted to theatre design. He has designed many music videos for Italian stars such as Lucio Dalla and Francesco Baccini, amongst many others, and his contribution to cinema has been enormous. He also conceived and designed the Italian Pavilions at Expo 2010 and 2015, in Shanghai and Milan respectively. He uses multimedia installations to convey his concepts, and architecture is always a major feature.

Giancarlo has collaborated with his colleague in scenography Leonardo Scarpa for many years and has been nominated for many prestigious cinema awards.

n 2000 he won the coveted Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for the Nanni Moretti film ‘La Stanza del figlio’ (The Son’s Room). In 2010 he won the Nastro d’Argento for scenography for the film ‘L’uomo che verra’(The Man Who Will Come), and The Dante Ferretti prize for best scenography for the film ‘L’Intrepido’(Intrepid- a Lonely Hero.) in 2014. Also in 2014 he was also rewarded with the David di Donatello award for his work on the film ‘Anni Felici’ (Those Happy years) directed by Daniele Luchetti.

On the International stage, he recently collaborated with the Iranian film director Abbas Kiarostami on the film ‘Copia conforme’(Certified Copy), which was selected for the New York Film Festival.

Giancarlo Basili is also known as a fine educator, giving masterclasses to students hoping to get into the competitive world of cinema.
